Biography

John William Maddox began life near Summerville, Georgia, and after studying law he established a practice in Rome that quickly drew upon his natural leadership. He served his neighbors in the state legislature and then went to Washington where he represented north Georgia in the U.S. House from 1887 to 1895, helping guide the post-Reconstruction era.

When his time in Congress ended he returned to Rome, where he continued to practice law, served as mayor, and remained a steady voice in civic affairs until his passing in 1922, earning the gratitude of the people he had long served.
