Biography

John Wolcott Stewart entered public life in Vermont as a thoughtful legislator and rose to become governor and, later, a U.S. senator, helping to shepherd the state through years of industrial change.

After leaving office he returned to Middlebury, where he remained a mentor and banker, and his grave there in Middlebury Cemetery continues to draw visitors who admire his steadiness.
