Biography
Johnny Schmitz, who spent the bulk of his life in baseball, debuted with the Chicago Cubs in the early 1940s and became known as a reliable left-handed starter; his control and endurance helped him earn two National League All-Star selections and the respect of opponents across the league. He was also appreciated for the way he carried himself off the field, a calm ambassador for the sport he loved.
After his playing days, Johnny delighted in sharing his knowledge with younger players and remained close with the many teammates who became friends for life, stepping onto the baseball diamond only in exchange for a warm handshake or a reason to smile. His family and friends chose Restlawn Memorial Park as his final resting place, honoring both the athlete and the gentle man he was.
