José Eduvigis Díaz, born in 1833, rose through the ranks of Paraguay's military and gained distinction for his leadership during the War of the Triple Alliance.
He died in 1867 after fierce fighting, yet his courage and commitment to his homeland remain part of Paraguay's collective memory around Asunción.
