Biography

José Luis Zorrilla de San Martín devoted his career to portraying Uruguay’s history and spirit through expressive colour and carefully composed scenes, earning a reputation as one of the country’s foremost painters of the early twentieth century.

His canvases, often inspired by national myths and the landscapes of the Río de la Plata, continue to be studied for their lyrical treatment of light and narrative detail, leaving a lasting testament preserved in museums and collections, while his memory rests at the Central Cemetery of Montevideo.
