Biography

Josef Hora, born in 1891, became one of the most cherished Czech poets and critics, using his pen to explore the hope and sorrow of his nation. He translated his love of language into poems that shimmer with moral clarity and into essays that invited readers to reckon with the world around them.

During the darkest years he persisted in speaking for justice and for the fragile bonds that tie people together, and his voice still echoes in the pages of Czech literature. He rests at Vyšehrad Cemetery, where many visit to pay tribute to his luminous spirit.
