Biography
Josef Kaňka was born in 1876 and lived through the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the emergence of the modern Czech nation. His long life spanned the transition from imperial rule to national independence and subsequent conflict.
Kaňka died in 1945 at the age of 69, having witnessed the full arc of Central European history in the twentieth century. He was laid to rest in the National Cemetery in Terezín, a place of remembrance for those whose lives encompassed extraordinary historical change.
