Biography

Joseph A. Goulden, born in 1844, answered the call of his country during the Civil War and later combined his experience in business with a sense of public duty. After decades in the private sector he was elected to represent New York in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1913 until his death, and he strove to keep everyday concerns of citizens at the forefront of his work in Washington.

He remained devoted to the people of his district, offering guidance and practical assistance whenever possible and encouraging younger leaders to approach politics with humility and integrity. When he was laid to rest in 1915, he was remembered for the steady counsel and thoughtful leadership he provided to so many.
