Biography

Joseph Alexander Cooper took up arms for the Union as a Tennessee volunteer, rising to the rank of brigadier general after distinguished service in the western theater and earning the respect of his peers for steady courage.

After the war he remained dedicated to reconciliation and veterans' causes, helping to guide his state through Reconstruction, and he now rests at Knoxville National Cemetery among fellow soldiers.
