Joseph Alexander Smith Acklen was a planter whose agricultural endeavors and landholdings reflected the economic structures of the antebellum South. Living from 1816 to 1863, Acklen's life encompassed the period of southern agricultural prominence and the subsequent upheaval of the Civil War era.

Acklen's memory is preserved at Mount Olivet Cemetery, where he was interred. His life and work represent an important chapter in the history of southern agriculture and the complex social and economic systems of nineteenth-century America.
