Biography

Joseph Alfred Slade, born in 1831, came to the West as part of the larger currents of 19th-century America. He is remembered in Utah for his role in efforts to confront lawlessness, often walking a fine line between enforcement and frontier justice.

Slade died in 1864 and rests at Salt Lake City Cemetery, where visitors today reflect on his troubled yet earnest attempt to bring order to a changing landscape.
