Biography
Joseph Gallieni was born in 1849 and built a career as a soldier and administrator who prized careful preparation, from his service in Madagascar to the crucial weeks of 1914 when he marshaled Paris's defenses and helped orchestrate the French response at the Marne.
When he served as Minister of War he insisted on support for soldiers and unity at home, leaving a record of steadiness that is remembered at Alphonse-Karr cemetery.
