Biography

Joseph Mauborgne graduated from West Point and became a career Army signal officer, serving in the Philippines, Mexico, and Europe while rising through the ranks as the United States modernized its communications. He brought discipline, technical curiosity, and leadership to signal battalions during both world wars and the changing chaos of the twentieth century.

A pioneer in cryptography, he co-created the one-time pad and championed electronic secure communications long before computers were commonplace, ensuring that the Armed Forces could rely upon trusted information; he now lies at Andersonville National Cemetery as a testament to his service to the nation.
