Biography

Joseph R. Cockerill (1818–1875) was a lawyer and public servant who devoted many years to the people of his region, serving both as a jurist and as a member of the U.S. Congress from Indiana. His career reflected a tireless interest in justice and the well-being of his fellow citizens.

He spent his final years near West Union and was laid to rest in West Union Village Cemetery upon his passing in 1875, leaving behind the imprint of a life spent in service. Those who walk the grounds today recall the principled approach he brought to his work.
