Biography

Joseph Somes parlayed his talent for shipping into a national enterprise, becoming one of the foremost shipowners of the 19th century and representing Dartmouth in Parliament as a committed advocate for maritime interests.

He remained attentive to the needs of his East London neighbours, supporting charitable causes around St Dunstan’s, Stepney, where the memorial affirms his reputation for civic duty and concern for the welfare of sailors and their families.
