Biography
Joshua Field rose from humble beginnings to become a leading engineer in London, applying his talents to the refinement of steam-pumping engines, dock machinery and the emerging railways of early nineteenth-century Britain.
He worked alongside the foremost practitioners of the day, helped found the Institution of Civil Engineers and championed disciplined management, ensuring the safety and reliability of the projects he oversaw; his legacy of steady stewardship is honoured at West Norwood Cemetery.
