Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819–1881) shaped American letters as a writer and editor, publishing poems, essays, and fiction that comforted and challenged readers while advancing moral reflection in the pages of noted literary magazines.

He encouraged younger writers and left a legacy of thoughtful prose that rests now beside him at Springfield Cemetery.
