Biography

Spanish-born Juan Bautista de Zengotita Bengoa devoted his life to the Church and accepted appointment to the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in Puerto Rico in the later years of the 18th century. During his tenure he emphasized pastoral visits, catechesis, and the careful stewardship of the island's parishes.

He drew clergy together in synods, encouraged the building and repair of chapels, and sought to harmonize the needs of rural faithful with the orders in San Juan before his death in 1802, leaving memories of steady guidance.
