Julian M. Quarles

1848–1929 (age 81)

U.S. Representative and judge

Biography

Julian M. Quarles, born in 1848, brought a lawyer’s precision and a scholar’s curiosity to the halls of Congress, where he represented Virginia and worked to address the needs of both farmers and cities.

Later, as a judge, he applied the same steady principles to the bench, earning respect for his fairness and for the generous manner in which he tutored younger lawyers, a legacy cherished today at Thornrose Cemetery.
