Biography
Julius Kahn, born in 1861, rose from a law practice in California to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives for more than two decades, where he became a steady voice for the West’s growing cities and for a strong national defense. He chaired the Committee on Military Affairs and worked to secure funding for public works and the infrastructure that linked the Pacific Coast to the rest of the country.
Colleagues respected his practical approach and his willingness to collaborate, and he used his influence to steer support toward education and transportation efforts; he rests at Home of Peace Cemetery and Emanu-El Mausoleum, among the community he represented in Washington.
