Jurka Vićbič
1905–1975 (age 70)
Biography
Jurka Vićbič spent his life weaving the stories of Belarusian villages into poems, novels, and essays, offering readers a portrait of the land’s beauty and resilience during the turbulent years between the wars. His journalism and literary work preserved dialects, memories, and traditions that might otherwise have been forgotten.
In the United States he nurtured the cultural life of the Belarusian-American community, mentoring younger writers and keeping alive the conversation about identity, and he now rests at South River Belarusian Cemetery, close to the people for whom he wrote so passionately.
