Biography

Karl August Senff, trained in the German academic tradition, brought rigorous principles to the University of Dorpat when he was appointed professor of drawing, and his lectures on anatomy and geometry defined a generation of Baltic German artists.

He combined teaching with producing portraits and engravings, publishing treatises that guided students, and his resting place at Raadi cemetery recalls the patient mentorship that kept his pupils mindful of craft.
