Kārlis Zemdega

Biography

Kārlis Zemdega (1894–1963) devoted his life to sculpting thoughtful, human-centered forms that rooted Latvian artisanship in the early twentieth century. He worked steadily to capture the quiet dignity of everyday people, shaping memorials and portraiture with a gentle hand.

Many of his pieces remain in public spaces as reminders of endurance, and his own resting place in Rainis Cemetery keeps him close to the nation whose memory he helped preserve.
