Biography

Katharine Merrill Graydon devoted her life to classical scholarship, teaching Latin and Greek to generations of students while championing women’s access to higher education. Her academic rigor and warm encouragement made her a beloved figure on the faculty of Butler University and in other Indiana colleges where she served.

Graydon’s writings and lectures celebrated ancient literature while drawing lessons for modern civic virtue, and she took particular joy in mentoring young women who aspired to scholarly careers. Her presence in Indianapolis’ intellectual circles enriched the cultural life of the city.
