Biography

Kintpuash, also known as Captain Jack, was born in 1837 and became a leader of the Modoc people, striving to keep his people together amid the pressures of removal and war. His deep connection to the land and his resistance in the face of overwhelming odds have been recorded with solemn respect by historians.

After conflict and surrender in 1873, he was taken to Fort Klamath Military Cemetery, where he was laid to rest; the site remains a place where the memory of his courage and the tragic cost of the Modoc War can be honored. His legacy endures in the stories of resilience he inspired.
