Kunio Maekawa

Biography

Kunio Maekawa was a pioneering Japanese architect whose innovative designs and modernist philosophy profoundly influenced Japanese architecture and urban planning. A student of Le Corbusier, Maekawa synthesized Western modernism with Japanese aesthetic principles to create distinctive and functional structures.

Maekawa's architectural legacy includes numerous significant buildings that shaped Japan's urban landscape throughout the twentieth century. His work demonstrated a commitment to integrating architecture with society and the environment. He passed away in 1986 and was laid to rest at Senju-in Temple, remembered as one of Japan's most influential architects.
