Biography

Laurence Chisholm Young, born in 1905, became one of the most insightful voices in twentieth-century analysis, bringing new clarity to the calculus of variations and inspiring the concept of Young measures. His scholarly work bridged algebra, geometry, and analysis, and generations of students felt shaped by his patient explanations and international outlook.

He carried those gifts to every lecture hall and conference, always reminding colleagues that mathematics was a shared conversation; his influence is still felt by scholars and researchers who follow the paths he opened. He was laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery, where the quiet surroundings echo the contemplative life he led.
