Biography

Lázár Mészáros, born in 1796, rose from modest origins to become the first Minister of War in the revolutionary government of 1848, reorganizing the Honvéd army and ensuring modern supply lines for the new forces.

Although the struggle for independence was lost and he spent years in exile, Mészáros never abandoned the ideals of service and military reform, and he is remembered for the discipline and integrity he brought to Hungary’s armed forces.
