Biography

Lewis M. Melander, born in 1845, was a devoted participant in Chicago’s civic life, combining practical skill with a deep sense of responsibility. His steady work advanced the city’s infrastructure and helped nurture confidence during periods of change.

He was generous with his time and resources, supporting efforts to educate young people and improve public spaces. When he died in 1900, he was remembered as a loyal friend to his community, and today his memory rests in Graceland Cemetery alongside other champions of Chicago.
