Biography
Lewis Tregonwell (1758–1832) was an English gentleman whose life coincided with the emergence of Bournemouth as a developing coastal settlement. A man of property and influence in the Dorset region, Tregonwell was instrumental in the early development and promotion of Bournemouth, envisioning its potential as a fashionable seaside resort during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Tregonwell's contributions to the growth and establishment of Bournemouth as a residential destination left a lasting impact on the town's development. He lived to see the beginning of the town's transformation from a quiet coastal hamlet into an increasingly popular destination. His death in 1832 marked the end of an era, and he was buried at St Peter's Church in Bournemouth, the parish church at the heart of the community he had helped to shape.
