Lily Pons

1898–1976 (age 78)

Biography

Lily Pons, born in 1898, leapt from the conservatories of France to become one of the most luminous coloratura sopranos of the twentieth century, dazzling audiences at the Metropolitan Opera and on stages across Europe. Her quicksilver voice, dramatic flair, and occasional turn in films brought operatic grace to a wider public while preserving the rigorous discipline of French singing.

Later in life she settled near Cannes and remained an ambassador for music, mentoring young artists and delighting admirers with tales of her golden years. Lily Pons's ashes rest peacefully in the Grand Jas Cemetery in Cannes, still drawing visitors who recall her crystalline tone.
