Biography
Lizzie Aiken (1817-1906) became known as "Mother Aiken" for the gentle care she offered to wounded soldiers and weary travelers during the Civil War, and her strength of character endeared her to Chicagoans as she settled near Graceland Cemetery.
She remained a quiet steward of comfort throughout her life, drawing upon her deep faith to encourage neighbors and kin, and today her gravesite reflects the gratitude of those who were calmed by her presence.
