Biography
Lodewijk van Heiden, a Dutch-born officer who entered Russian service, rose through the ranks to command fleets in the Mediterranean and led the decisive attack on the Ottoman-Egyptian squadron at Navarino in 1827.
He spent his final years in Estonia, advising naval circles and tending to charitable causes, and his grave there stands as a tribute to the admiral who bridged nations with courage and courtesy.
