Biography

Louis Bamberger (1855-1944) rose from humble beginnings to build Bamberger's department store into a hallmark of innovation and hospitality, earning devotion from shoppers and employees alike. His success never dimmed his sense of civic responsibility; he gave liberally to educational, cultural, and humanitarian causes, most notably providing vital support to the Institute for Advanced Study and to institutions across New Jersey.

In retirement he turned entirely to philanthropy, ensuring that the blessings he had received were shared widely, and he now rests at Rosedale and Rosehill Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and a sharper focus on knowledge and the arts.
