Politician

Biography

Louis Barthou devoted himself to the Republic from his early days as a barrister, rising through the ranks of the Chamber of Deputies to lead cabinets with calm resolve and to serve repeatedly as prime minister, justice minister, and foreign minister, always guided by a belief in collective security and the rule of law.

As foreign minister he championed Franco-European cooperation and the impartial pursuit of peace, a mission he pursued until his assassination while defending his country at the 1934 Marseille conference; he rests at Père Lachaise, where visitors recall the integrity of his statesmanship.
