Biography

Louis Sockalexis (1871-1913) blazed a trail from Old Town, Maine to the national stage, becoming the first Native American to play Major League Baseball while carrying the pride of the Penobscot Nation with him every time he stepped to the plate.

He returned to his homeland with a commitment to inspire young people, and the warmth he showed to neighbors and visiting fans lives on among those who gather at Old Town Cemetery to remember him.
