Lucien Galtier

1811–1866 (age 55)

Catholic priest

Biography

Lucien Galtier came from France as a missionary priest and became the first resident Catholic shepherd for the early settlers of what became St. Paul, Minnesota, building the first log chapel and famously petitioning to name the burgeoning community for the Apostle Paul.

He ministered to scattered families and Native communities with humility and was never far from the simple faith that sustained him; he now rests at Saint Gabriel Cemetery, remembered for planting the roots of the local church.
