Biography

Mae Nolan broke new ground as one of the earliest women to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, answering the call to continue the work of her late husband and, in doing so, demonstrating that service and leadership know no gender. During her tenure she represented California with a level-headed focus on practical legislation and constituent needs.

Throughout her public life she maintained a touchstone of grace, defending the responsibility of elected office while remaining attentive to the everyday lives of those she served. Nolan’s contribution to American public life remains part of the steady advance toward equitable representation.
