Biography

Marc Lavry, born in 1903 in Riga, came to Palestine with a passion for melding the folk melodies of the region with the grand languages of European symphonic and theatrical music, setting the stage for a national musical voice.

He wrote beloved stage works, operettas, and orchestral pieces, championed new singers, and collaborated with lyricists to ensure that the sounds of the Jewish community were reflected in the cultural life of the Yishuv and later the State of Israel, a legacy honored at Hof HaCarmel Cemetery.
