Marcus Aurelius Root (1808–1888) was an early photographer whose fascination with capturing the human face helped elevate the medium’s standing as an art form. His efforts to refine technique and share knowledge encouraged a growing appreciation for the new craft.

He rests at The Woodlands, honored for the visual legacy he left to later generations of image makers.
