Marcus Lawrence Ward Sr.

Biography

Marcus Lawrence Ward Sr. combined business acumen with public purpose, serving first as mayor and later as governor of New Jersey during the difficult early years of Reconstruction.

He championed education, veterans’ relief, and civil rights in his later years, and he rests in Mount Pleasant Cemetery after passing in 1884.
