Theater magnate

Biography

Marcus Loew rose from modest beginnings to build a national chain of nickelodeons that became the sprawling Loew's Theatres empire, combining exhibition houses with production and distribution arms that helped launch Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

He insisted on high standards for cinema and supported numerous Jewish charities, and when he died the Maimonides Cemetery became the chosen resting place for the visionary whose theaters shaped the American cultural landscape.
