Maria Merkert

Biography

Maria Merkert was a dedicated nurse who devoted her life to caring for others during the nineteenth century. Her compassionate work exemplified the highest ideals of the nursing profession in her era.

Merkert lived from 1817 to 1872, witnessing and participating in the development of modern healthcare practices. She was honored with burial at the Basilica of St. Jacob and St. Agnes, a testament to the respect and esteem in which she was held by her community.
