Born in 1760, Marie Pelagie Chouteau came of age in the French colonial world that gathered around the Mississippi frontier, tending her household through seasons of change while Anglo-American influence took root in the region.

Laid to rest in Old Cathedral Cemetery, she is remembered as one of the steady presences who wove family bonds into the evolving communities of the early republic.
