Mário de Sá-Carneiro, born in 1890, was a leading figure of the Portuguese modernist movement whose poetry and novels captured the anxieties of the age with an intensely personal voice.

His friendship with Fernando Pessoa and his restless literary experimentation made him a touchstone for later writers, even as he struggled with inner turmoil, leading to his untimely death in 1916.
