Biography
Martha Berry, born in 1865, dedicated her life to educating southern Appalachian youth, founding the Berry Schools to provide academic opportunities paired with practical skills. She believed in nurturing whole persons, combining rigorous coursework with character-building work programs that prepared students for leadership and service.
Her philanthropic endeavors grew into Berry College, where her vision of hospitality extended to faculty, staff, and the countless children who passed through its gates. The Chapel Cemetery near Berry College is now home to her resting place, a reminder of the enduring promise of education she championed.
