Martha Johnson Patterson (1828–1901) served as her father’s trusted aide and, during his presidency, as the White House hostess who kept the home’s traditions alive during turbulent times.

In the years after Andrew Johnson’s passing she safeguarded his legacy, tending to the National Cemetery and ensuring that his story remained accessible to future generations.
