Martha Wærn
1741–1812 (age 71)
Biography
Martha Wærn (1741–1812) combined a keen understanding of commerce with a generous heart, using her resources to establish Wærn’s Stiftelse and other relief for girls who otherwise would lack schooling and opportunity; her purposeful stewardship of funds now echoes in the long-lived institutions commemorated near Assistens Cemetery.
She kept a steady eye on those structures, guiding trustees and reminding them that generosity was a lifelong commitment, and her clear-sighted philanthropy inspired contemporaries to join in building a more compassionate city.
