Martín Miguel de Güemes (1785–1821) was a distinguished military leader and patriot who played a crucial role in Argentina's struggle for independence. Born in Salta, he rose to prominence as a cavalry commander and became the governor of Salta Province, where he organized the famous "Gauchos de Güemes," an irregular cavalry force that defended the northern frontier against Spanish royalist forces and became legendary in Argentine military history.
Güemes was known for his strategic brilliance, his deep connection to the gaucho culture, and his unwavering commitment to the independence cause. He was mortally wounded in a skirmish while defending his province and died in 1821, becoming a revered martyr of Argentine independence.
