Biography

Mary Bonsall was born in 1753 and witnessed the upheavals of the colonial era, the Revolutionary War, and the birth of the republic. Her long life meant she could offer steady companionship to neighbors at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery as the city matured around her.

She passed in 1842 and was laid to rest in the churchyard that holds so many of her contemporaries, abiding evidence of the generations that formed New York's civic and spiritual foundation.
